PALM HARBOR — A retired school teacher from Indiana was injured early Saturday when she went to help a sheriff's deputy who was trying to subdue a suspect. Sharon L. Scroggins [52208, fb], 59, suffered a concussion and bruising to her face after the suspect hit her in the jaw and knocked her to the ground. The incident began shortly before 4:30 a.m. when Scroggins was driving her father, Maurice Scherf, 83, of Palm Harbor, to the doctor. She was heading down Alderman Road near Westlake Boulevard when a shirtless man ran in front of her 2000 Chevrolet Suburban. "She said she bumped the guy, backed up, called 911," said her husband, Dwight Scroggins [52207]. ... Dwight Scroggins said he and his wife recently retired from teaching school in Indiana. They came to Pinellas to be with Sharon Scroggins' father, who is ill. Her father was not injured in the fracas Saturday. Sharon Scroggins spent about eight hours in the emergency room at Florida Hospital North Pinellas before being released. ... Dwight Scroggins said his wife has no training in self-defense and has never been involved in any similar incidents. But he said her actions did not surprise him. "If somebody needs help, she's going to help them," he said.

Laura Scroggins is the Assistant Director of Volunteer Programs and Service Learning. She comes to Sacred Heart with experience in program and academic management, as well as working with non-profit organizations. During her service as a Peace Corps Volunteer in China from 2006 to 2008, Laura taught English to university students and organized training workshops for aspiring teachers. Upon her return to the United States, Laura completed her M.Ed. in Curriculum and Instruction with a certification in TESOL at the University of Cincinnati. Her academic studies have focused on diverse populations and critical thinking in higher education. In addition to her work in the Peace Corps, Laura has also worked with a range of nonprofit organizations, including Habitat for Humanity, Catholic Charities, the League of Women Voters and Every 1 Reads. In her current position at Sacred Heart, Laura coordinates with community partners and students to manage local volunteer programming, while assisting scholarship and grant recipients. She also oversees Community Connections and CURTIS Week.
